Best Practice WomenSports website - Setting up your local Women’s Sport/Fitness website
“ThisGirl wants to get on the ACTIVEMapX”
If you’re going to support the latest world-wide initiatives (below) – WSNet can help you set up your own local page using content from the Sport England’s ‘ThisGirlCan’ resource centre and blend it with a local version of ACTIVEMapX – WSNet’s own free website promoting local, community-based sport & fitness classes near you. Click here to view ACTIVEMapX.

Finding small, fun classes/events in the local area increases the likelihood of women/girls in getting started. Pay-as-you go and ‘working out’ with friends between ‘drop-offs’, not too much lycra and a cup of coffee at the end – may be the solution to keeping engaged. ACTIVEMapX lists over twenty thousand classes across the UK (only) – and will publish them into your local website with the simple addition of a ‘widget’ (*Java Script/Ajax) just like Facebook or Twitter. Helping your communities engage, providing small fitness businesses some free marketing and, breathing energy into the local economy with revenues which ususally stay in your county, borough or towns!
Get ACTIVE, get 'local'!
Check out what @SportsWatch_ Bristol - http://sportwatchbristol.wordpress.com/ are doing. A great example of a local women’s sports website – based on the work of the Bristol Fawcett Society (http://www.bristolfawcett.org.uk/). Try to engage with local sports clubs or others (tweeters/bloggers) in your community who are already talking about women’s/sport/issues and try to channel their activity into a blog? You might advertise for local advocates (as per @Sportswatch_ Bristol) and harness local skills/enthusiasm. Why not tie up with the local paper or radio station to share the audience and get them to help you to generate content? A regular column/slot in any form of local media - offers you the chance to communicate better - it offers the media the chance to promote (and sell advertising) to small local businesses and gyms.
How do I get ACTIVEMapX?
We will send you a small widget which you can embed into your website pages – see example – no code or files sit on your web ‘servers’ . You’ll want to check our T&Cs (LINK) they’re not as arduous as Google's but necessary – for both parties . . . and your organisation MUST register (and be accepted) with Sport England’s ThisGirlCan campaign – register here - http://www.thisgirlcan.co.uk

SPORTSReport - @Twing_UK – You could include one of our Twitter SPORTSReports channels – we provide a constant stream of women's sports news from across the UK with https://twitter.com/twing_uk (or there's https://twitter.com/twing_AUS etc . . . )
JOBSNetWORK – employment is one of the most empowering things – working in sport is the best (that why your reading this!) – WSNet runs a jobs board – hundreds of jobs local or national – coaching, admin or supervising – why not put a link to JOBSNetWORK – we don’t charge to advertise – so why not?
@HerSPORTSChannel - set up your own ‘local’ ♀Twitter Channel – once you’ve set it up – use it as a content management tool to add content to your website – report on local sports stories, again share it with your local newspaper?
Getting started
You can hunt around for the content and links you feel you need - most of the organisatoins listed above provide some free content. You then need to register with ACTIVEMapX to check you’re happy with our T&Cs. Then email paul.r@wsnet.co.uk with the address of the site you wish to embed into.
WSNet will then send you dimensions for the spaces for your designers to add the map and search facility plus some script and a style sheet - all things which your web developers will be familiar with - but were still there to help if you need it.
If you want more info please email paul.r@wsnet.co.uk to get started and mention the URL of the site you hope to embed into.
